What Is a Resume Summary?
A resume summary (also called a professional summary or career summary) is a brief 2-4 sentence overview of your professional background placed at the top of your resume. It serves as your personal pitch, highlighting your most relevant experience, skills, and achievements.
Resume Summary vs. Objective
A summary focuses on what you bring to the table based on past experience. An objective focuses on what you want from the job. In most cases, a summary is more effective because it addresses the employer's needs rather than yours.
Use an objective only if you're a recent graduate, changing careers, or entering the workforce for the first time.
How to Write a Strong Summary
- Start with your professional title and years of experience
- Include 2-3 of your most impressive, relevant achievements
- Mention key skills that match the job description
- End with what you aim to accomplish in the role
- Keep it to 3-5 lines maximum
