Key Differences
Resume: A concise 1-2 page document tailored to a specific job. Focuses on relevant experience and skills. Used in the US, Canada, and most of the private sector worldwide.
CV (Curriculum Vitae): A comprehensive document of unlimited length covering your entire academic and professional history. Used for academic, research, and medical positions, as well as standard practice in many countries outside the US.
When to Use Each
- Use a resume for: Private sector jobs in the US/Canada, most corporate positions, any job that asks for a "resume"
- Use a CV for: Academic positions, research roles, medical careers, international applications (UK, Europe, Asia), fellowships and grants, any position that specifically requests a CV
Regional Differences
In the UK, Ireland, and many European countries, "CV" is the standard term for what Americans call a resume. In these regions, a CV is typically 1-2 pages and equivalent to an American resume. When in doubt, follow the conventions of the country where you are applying.
